DJ Zee-Lion
Host, Kulcha Shak
DJ Zee-Lion is Ziah Ayubu, a Rasta man, musician, and DJ who serves as the host of Kulcha Shak on WPFW. Born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ziah grew up during a time when Rastas were frequently targeted and harassed for their way of life, an experience that shaped his deep commitment to culture and community. He brings this perspective to the airwaves every Saturday, where he and his co-host and wife, Sista Kim Bey, curate an eclectic mix of music intended to bridge the cultural gap between Africa and its global diaspora.
Ziah's journey with the station began after he moved to the D.C. area and found himself drawn to WPFW for its unique style of music and essential information. Already established as a musician, he joined the programming team in 2016 after a friend informed him the station was looking for a reggae host. For Ziah, radio is a vital tool for connection; he believes that music is the healing of the nation and uses his program to represent the full spectrum of sounds from across the African diaspora.
An accomplished artist beyond the studio, Ziah is the founder of the Proverbs Reggae Band and has released two albums along with several singles. His musical contributions have earned him significant recognition, including being a five-time DC Reggae Award winner and a DC Wammie Award winner. He has performed as a main act regionally, opened for numerous international reggae artists, and took second place during Caribbean night at the legendary Apollo Theater.
In his life outside of music and broadcasting, Ziah remains dedicated to the well-being of his neighbors. He is passionate about working within the community to help people access and understand natural foods, herbs, and supplements. Guided by the principle to think globally and act locally, Ziah encourages the WPFW community to stay involved in local efforts and support one another to create lasting progress.
