EST. WASHINGTON, DC - 1977
Keep the Signal
Alive
WPFW was not built in a boardroom. It was built by a group of local and national movement leaders who believed the airwaves belonged to the people — and that jazz, funk, soul, and the ongoing struggle for human dignity deserved a permanent home on the dial.
To keep this signal independent and rooted in the District, we need listeners like you to transition from being a listener to becoming a stakeholder.
At WPFW, membership is more than a donation—it is an act of democratic participation. A basic annual membership is just $25. This contribution grants you official status as a member of the Pacifica Foundation, the historic network founded in 1949 as the first broadcast model in the country to rely on listener sponsorship rather than corporate funding.
As a member, you are a steward of the station’s future. Your $25 annual membership makes you eligible to:
Vote in Station Elections: You elect the 18 Listener Representatives who serve on our Local Station Board (LSB).
Run for the Board: Members who have donated a minimum of $25 are eligible to run for a seat on the LSB, helping guide fundraising, outreach, and programming accountability.
Shape the Future: The LSB is the community’s voice, ensuring our broadcasts reflect the diverse needs of neighborhoods from Takoma to Anacostia.
Your Seat at the Table
The Heartbeat of WPFW: Become a Monthly Sustainer.
While a one-time $25 gift grants you full membership rights, we encourage those who can to join our Jazz and Justice Circle as monthly donors.
Monthly giving is the heartbeat of the station. It provides the predictable revenue we need to sign leases, invest in emergency equipment, and bring bold new voices to the dial. While a one-time gift helps us today, a monthly gift allows us to plan for the long haul
What Your Monthly Support Makes Possible:
$10/month: Sponsors a vital community event.
$25/month: Funds a DJ training session for DC youth, ensuring the next generation of soulful voices is heard.
$50/month: Supports one week of archive digitization, preserving our 49-year history.
-
Reliable Programming
Monthly donations provide steady, predictable income so we can plan long-term shows, investigative reporting, music series, and cultural programs without constant fundraising interruptions.
-
Local Independence
Your recurring gift helps preserve WPFW’s editorial independence—ensuring voices from Washington, DC and beyond aren’t shaped by corporate interests.
-
Better Listening
Stable funding reduces on-air pledge drives and frees air time for music, conversation, and community connection.
From Our Listeners"WPFW is my lifeline. I give monthly because I want to make sure this frequency is free for my grandkids. It's the only place on the dial where the music has a soul and the news has a conscience." — Sustaining Member since 2021
