Join WPFW for our 5th Fiftyith-Year Benefit Concert with a film. The afternoon starts with a screening of Cody Valentine’s (a.k.a. WPFW’s DJ Cody V, The Music Bed) debut film, Purple Velvet Planet and a few words from the director himself. We will then end the incredible evening with a musical set by Baltimore bred and based, Blue Note recording artist trumpeter Brandon Wood with his band Upendo & guest drummer. Cuba Libre: Honoring the Cuban People, and Commemorating the Centennial Birthday of El Comandante Fidel Castro
WPFW presents Cuba Libre: Honoring the Cuban People, and Commemorating the Centennial Birthday of La Comandante Fidel Castro on Thursday, August 13 from midnight to midnight.
The programming will unpack the current situation on the ground, as well as the areas of music and culture, medicine, literacy, education, renewable energy, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, elder care, the Afro-descendants initiative, and more. It will also discuss Cuba’s contemporary and historical significance within a Pan-African and Caribbean context, and the historical cultural relationship between Cuba and the United States.

WPFW holds a monthly volunteer orientation on Zoom from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, welcoming new and returning volunteers to learn about station history, values, and community guidelines. The session includes a presentation, a live Q&A with staff and seasoned volunteers, and guidance on next steps for training and scheduling, ensuring participants leave informed about how to get involved and support WPFW’s mission.
