Decipher is WPFW’s hip hop program, launched January 31, 2005 by a collective that had been pushing for a place on the station for years. Its members describe themselves as artists in service to the past, present, and future of the culture. On the fourth Saturday, Jevon Howard — DJ Machete — focuses on Golden Era hip hop and the art of the original sample, introducing listeners to the source material that built the genre and sending them back to the artists who paved the way. The program plays the authentic music commercial radio ignores, and treats every set as an education.
