Jam Session ~ Life Music offers what host Saïs Kamalidiin calls a 360-degree exposure to the most potent musical traditions in existence, moving between jazz, Latin, classical, and folk forms drawn from anywhere in the African diaspora. Kamalidiin first joined WPFW in 1984, welcomed at the old H Street studio by Guy “Fish” Middleton, served six years, left to earn a doctorate in ethnomusicology, and was invited back years later. An associate professor of music at Howard University for twenty-seven years, he builds each week to be completely different from the last and deliberately never tells listeners what is coming. His guiding conviction: music is the healing force of the universe.
