Jazz Masters is one of the longest-running jazz programs in Washington. Host Tim Masters, a D.C. native who has been listening to WPFW since 1977, created the show in 1982 at WDCU 90.1 FM on the University of the District of Columbia campus, where it ran for seventeen years until the university sold the license. After a stint at WRNR in Annapolis, program director Bobby Hill brought Jazz Masters to WPFW in 2007. Masters worked as an interviewer for Time-Life’s Giants of Jazz series and gave WPFW a Mary Lou Williams interview for special programming in 1981 — years before he ever hosted here.
